Even though the residents are of US origin, they are not allowed to vote.
With around 2 million visitors every year, tourism is considered to be a primary activity. Other sources of income are rum distilling, electronics, textiles, watch assembly and pharmaceuticals. With a small agricultural sector, most of the food is imported from outside. Tropical hurricanes and storms are common to the people of the Virgin Islands. It is the only part of the US where the traffic drives to the left side of the road. The Cyril E King International airport and Henry E. Rohlsen International Airport are the 2 airports located on the islands which connect them to the outer world. All this is wrapped as a combined package all safe and secure under the government of the United States. What else can you expect?
British Virgin Islands
Whether you are planning your next family vacation, the next business meeting or the next romantic weekend with your loved one, the British Virgin Islands is the place to go. Located in the Caribbean to the east of Puerto Rico, it is a British Overseas territory. The main islands present in the British Virgin Islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke along with 50 more small islands, 15 out of which are inhabited. The total population on the islands is about 22000. Tortola, the biggest island has the capital of the islands, the Road Town.
The British Virgin Islands enjoy a sunny and a tropical climate, which is followed and moderated by the trade winds. The variation in the temperature is minimum throughout the year. The wettest months in the islands are September to November and the driest are February and March.
Tourism and financial services are the main sources of income on the island. Nearly 50% of the fees of the island come from the license fees of offshore companies. The island is a popular destination for the US citizens who enjoy the snorkel and the coral reefs, the baths of Gorda and the well known bars of Van Dyke. Sailing is a major activity on the islands and sailboats is the most common medium to visit the small sub islands. The agricultural produce constitutes only a small part of the economy and includes fruits, vegetables poultry, livestock and sugarcane.
For travel, there are a total of 113 km of roads. The main airport which connects the island to outer world is Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, also known as Beef Island Airport, which is located on Beef Island. A large number of ferries operate between the islands and its US counterpart, fully connecting it. These islands are a gift of nature, still untouched by the tourism, giving it unparallel beauty.
